Stomped the 3, Ate the Rope: A Gnarly Reminder to Watch Your Speed in Japan

You know that feeling. You're flowing through the resort, the snow is deep, and you spot that perfect little side hit. You wind up, pop a clean 360, stomp the landing bolts... and feel like an absolute hero.

Then, reality hits you. Literally.

That’s exactly what went down for Japanese ripper Koga Hoshino recently. In a clip that’s making the rounds, Koga sends a absolutely beautiful inbounds 360. The rotation was smooth, the landing was butter, but his braking distance? Non-existent.

The Clothesline from Hell

Straight out of a cartoon, Koga lands his trick and immediately runs neck-first into a boundary safety rope. It’s the classic clothesline move.

Watching the replay, it looks jarring. He goes from Mach 10 to zero in a split second, taking a massive backslap into the snow. If this was on an icy East Coast groomer, we’d be talking about a trip to the ER. But this is Japan, baby! The deep, fluffy stuff was there to catch him.

Koga popped right back up, giving the universal "all good" wave to the camera. What a legend. It’s a hilarious reminder that even when you’re skiing at a pro level, the mountain (and its infrastructure) always wins.

Situational Awareness is Key

Look, we all get a little tunnel vision on powder days. When the white room is calling, it’s easy to focus solely on the line and forget about the boundaries. But in Japan especially, those ropes can sneak up on you fast. They often mark sudden terrain traps or merge points that aren't obvious until you're right on top of them.

It’s a solid lesson for all of us: keep your head on a swivel, even when you're celebrating a sick landing.

Gear Check for Japan

If you're planning to head over to the Land of the Rising Sun to chase these kinds of conditions (hopefully with fewer rope collisions), you need the right kit. Visibility is everything when you're dodging ropes in a storm.

  • Goggles: I swear by the Smith Squad MAG Goggles for quick lens changes when the light goes flat.
  • Skis: You need float. The Atomic Bent 110 Skis are playful enough for those side hits but wide enough to keep you on top.

Also, if you are heading over there, don't get stuck with crazy roaming charges when you're trying to upload your own crash reels to Instagram. Do yourself a favor and grab an eSIM for your trip before you fly out. It saves so much hassle.

Koga is a certified ripper, and if you want to see more stylish skiing (mostly without the abrupt stops), definitely give him a follow.

Stay safe, watch out for ropes, and keep sending it!
