The Olympics are sterile, and sometimes even the X Games feels like it’s catering more to the energy drink sponsors than the core culture. But the suits at X Games League (XGL) might have just made the smartest move in their history: they're letting the riders drive the bus.
Ahead of X Games Aspen 2026, the league has announced six winter "Founder Athletes" who aren't just there to collect medals—they're there to design the future of the sport. We're talking about Eileen Gu, Zeb Powell, Chloe Kim, Jamie Anderson, Mark McMorris, and Scotty James.
Why This Matters
Usually, "advisory roles" are corporate fluff. But look at that roster.
Zeb Powell isn't a robot; he's the guy who broke the internet with a coffin slide in Knuckle Huck. Mark McMorris is the definition of resilience and technical precision. Eileen Gu is dominating everything she touches. If these athletes are actually given the power to shape competition formats, we might finally see a shift away from the soulless "spin-to-win" gymnastics that plague modern comps and a return to style, creativity, and actual progression.
According to the press release, these six will guide the creative direction, athlete experience, and competition structure. They join the summer crew—Nyjah Huston, Leticia Bufoni, Ryan Sheckler, and Ryan Williams—to effectively build this thing from the ground up.
The Arena
It all goes down at the spiritual home of freestyle: Aspen Snowmass. The resort pulls a decent 74.2/100 on ShredIndex, mostly because the terrain parks are world-class even if the town prices will make your wallet bleed. The X Games returns there for its 25th consecutive year from January 23rd to 25th.
If you're planning to witness the progression in person, you'd better act fast. You can find accommodation in Aspen before the crowds descend.
Gear Up
You can't buy Zeb's creativity or Gu's amplitude, but you can ride what they ride. If you're looking to push your own park progression this season, stop blaming your gear and get on something built for the job:
