As a ski mom, I always tell parents that the mountains are unpredictable—usually, I’m talking about sudden weather changes or a lost mitten, not a 500-pound animal sprinting through a beginner lesson!
But that is exactly what happened recently at Val-Louron in the French Pyrenees. A group of ski school students got the surprise of a lifetime when a majestic Red Deer buck decided to cut right across their slope. And let me tell you, this wasn't a tiny Bambi situation; we are talking about a full-grown stag, antlers and all.
A Front-Row Seat to Nature
The footage, captured by the local ski school (ESF Val Louron), shows the massive animal bounding across the groomed run with incredible speed. You can see the buck is clearly focused on getting from point A to point B, paying very little mind to the group of children in their high-vis vests.

For the kids, this must have been absolutely magical (and maybe a tiny bit scary!). It’s one of those moments that reminds us that when we visit the mountains, we are visitors in their home.
What Parents Should Know
While this video is breathtaking, it’s also a great reminder to talk to our kids about wildlife safety. Red Deer are common in the Pyrenees, especially in the mid-to-high elevation valleys. An adult male like this one can stand 4.5 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 550 pounds. They are powerful creatures.
Usually, these animals are crepuscular—meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk—specifically to avoid us noisy humans. However, encounters do happen. If you're planning to book your family ski trip to France or anywhere in the mountains, here are a few things I always tell my own kids:
- Stop and Wait: If you see an animal crossing a trail, stop skiing immediately. Give them the right of way.
- Keep Your Distance: Never try to approach or feed wildlife. That buck in the video was just passing through, but they can be dangerous if they feel cornered, especially during the rut (mating season).
- Stay Calm: Loud noises can spook animals, making their behavior unpredictable. Enjoy the sighting quietly.
A Memory for the Books
Thankfully, this encounter was peaceful. The buck was more interested in high-tailing it to the other side of the valley than interacting with the ski school.
Val-Louron is known for being incredibly family-friendly, with a fantastic beginner area where kids can usually focus on their turns without dodging wildlife! It’s moments like these that turn a regular ski holiday into a lifelong memory. I’m just glad everyone stayed safe and got to witness such a beautiful example of nature in motion.
