Angel Fire Resort

“Having explored several ski resorts, I found Angel Fire to be a budget-friendly and family-oriented choice, which is why I rate it 5 stars. As a newcomer to skiing and a parent to small children, I found some aspects worthy of note. We opted to stay in a local lodge as opposed to the main one and found the services excellent. The ski lift was very operational, and we were able to rent ski equipment from a nearby shop. What we appreciated the most was the free access to the ski lift for kids under 6 during January. Angel Fire offers a variety of activities such as tubing, sledding, and sleigh rides. They also have a golf course. And for those who prefer to ski at night, they offer affordable night skiing lift access. However, for beginners or those with children, be aware that the slopes at The Bunny Hill are steeper and faster than expected. The lift for this hill does not stop to let people on or off and can only seat two at a time without protective bars. Getting to the ski lifts requires uphill walking from the nearest driveway, which can be quite a task given the weight of the ski equipment and the altitude that could affect breathing. This was particularly challenging for our young children who had to walk uphill in cold, snowy weather while carrying heavy ski equipment. We also observed that the snow on The Bunny Hill was more compacted than expected, making it less soft for falls. On a different note, some potholes need to be patched up on the entrance road. Even during snowfall, we managed to access main roads without tire chains, thanks to the snow plows. However, I suggest having snow chains handy just in case. The parking lot of our lodge wasn't plowed, and while there are several free parking lots surrounding the mountain, they aren't close to the ski lifts. Thankfully, the resort provides a free shuttle service to and from the ski lifts, which was very convenient! Despite some challenges, our overall experience at Angel Fire was enjoyable. It offers an affordable and fun-filled snow skiing experience for families, even for first-timers like us.”

“I recently visited Angel Fire Resort for a ski/snowboard trip with my friends. Being a complete novice at snowboarding, I decided to book a beginner's lesson. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't as great as I expected. Despite having two levels of lessons, the one designed for beginners felt slightly rushed. My instructor had us practicing heel edge down the bunny hill, which was fine. However, on our second run, we were immediately introduced to the toe edge and started practicing s-curves or "linking". Personally, I found this progression too fast for a complete beginner. I believe we should have had more rounds practicing single edge before moving onto more complex techniques. Sadly, I ended up with a broken wrist an hour into the lesson. Although I acknowledge that the risks involved come with a waiver, I still believe the instruction could have been more considerate of our beginner status. Due to this, I would advise against beginners taking lessons here. On a more positive note, it's worth mentioning that the staff at the resort were quite friendly and helpful. I also think it would be a great idea if the resort offered wrist guards with equipment rental for beginners to prevent such mishaps.”

“I had an exceptional experience at Angel Fire Resort, particularly thanks to the outstanding assistance provided by Kat at the top of the Dreamcatcher slope. As a beginner, I had a bit of a tumble, but Kat was there to help me. She helped drag me to the side, assist me in getting up, and even guided me on how to get back on my skis. Her help was greatly appreciated and she definitely deserves recognition for her efforts.”
