Bad Kleinkirchheim

“My visit to Bad Kleinkirchheim was a first-time experience, as a holder of the Kärnten/Osttirol Card. We started off by visiting the Imperial Castle and got a brief introduction to the ski area from two Viennese tourists on the train. The slopes were in good condition for the first couple of hours, but we soon noticed a problem. The artificial snow surface became very icy, which made it difficult for the snow to bind, leading to uneven and slippery areas. We thought that milling the slopes could solve this issue, but it seemed like a significant effort. Deciding to explore further, we moved to the sunnier side of the ski area, which felt nostalgic with its transport systems that reminded us of the year 1976. Our aim was to reach St. Oswald, but we were discouraged by a crowd of approximately 170 people at the connecting lift, so we chose to descend the valley and ascend the other side instead. Our lunch at the Kaiserburg was satisfying, with excellent service from the young staff. However, overall, our visit to Bad Kleinkirchheim was a one-time experience. It seemed like the area lacked investment in innovation and future development over the years, which is reflected in its 3.8-star rating on the "skiresort at" portal. This could potentially pose challenges for the future generation of tourism professionals in coping with much-needed advancements.”

“In my 25 years of skiing experience, I have to say the slopes at Bad Kleinkirchheim were disappointing. I found only a few pistes were prepared, often with just a small track on the side. The condition of the gondolas and cable cars left a lot to be desired too, as they appeared quite outdated and damp inside. Unfortunately, these experiences make me less inclined to return. It was a unique experience, but not in the way I had hoped.”

“I visited the ski area of Bad Kleinkirchheim and St. Oswald, which I believe is a perfect place for ski enthusiasts. The majority of the railway systems were well-maintained and in good shape. However, only the 8-seater Brunnach gondola and the 6-seater Spitzeck chairlift were available, though they were a bit basic, lacking features like a hood or seat heating. Switching between the Kaiserburg and St. Oswald areas was somewhat challenging. Besides the Sonnwiesenbahn I and II and Nockalmbahn, which are over 40 years old and move quite slowly, the return route on skis was not well-prepared and was labeled as "unprepared". Moreover, several routes from the Imperial Castle were closed. Despite these shortcomings, the snow depth was reported to be between 40 and 90cm. During my ski day, I had a midday snack at the Nock In at the Brunnach mountain station. I found the drink selection to be quite expensive. The Kaiserschmarrn, priced at just under €18, was served within 3 minutes, suggesting it was not freshly prepared and was somewhat soggy and tough. Other small dishes were priced up to €15 and were rather small. The Wienerschnitzel also arrived at the table after just 3 minutes. In conclusion, I would advise other skiers to consider other ski areas. Despite its World Cup fame, I felt this area fell short of expectations. I would hesitate to even give it one star.”
