Høgevarde Overview

Høgevarde is a remarkable ski resort nestled in the majestic mountain ridge of Norefjell, between the Hallingdal and Eggedal valleys, just north of Oslo. Visitors are captivated by its stunning views, expansive terrain, and the opportunity to take part in a variety of outdoor activities.

The resort offers an incredible panoramic view that spans about 40,000 square kilometers. On a clear day, one can see from the peaks of Rondane to Jotunheimen, from the Glacier Hardangerjøkulen to Gaustatoppen. This vast view is considered the second largest overview in southern Norway, providing an impressive sightseeing experience for visitors.

Høgevarde also holds a significant historical significance. Until 1858, the saddle under the summit was a vibrant meeting point for residents of the surrounding valleys. Here, they would trade goods, sell horses, and celebrate with wild dances during the summer at Raudmyrdansen's festival. Despite a tragic snowstorm in 1858 that claimed the lives of nine people, the tradition of celebration continues today, albeit in the form of Halloween.

The resort offers a great hiking experience, suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. The summit can be reached in approximately one hour, with a relatively harmonious scenery throughout the journey. The round trip totals approximately 10 km, starting from the car park, with a few steep ascents along the way.

Visitors can also enjoy a range of other activities, including cycling, cross-country skiing, and wildlife viewing. The area is rich with wildlife and offers plenty of berries and mushrooms for foraging. The resort also boasts a well-arranged trail network and a cosy DNT cabin for a delicious waffle break.

In conclusion, Høgevarde is not only an excellent ski resort but also a vibrant hub of outdoor activities, historical significance, and natural beauty. Its unique blend of stunning views, diverse terrain, and rich history make it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
