Togari Onsen, a quaint ski resort nestled next to the more popular Nozawa Onsen ski resort, offers a cozy and less crowded alternative for families and skiing enthusiasts. While it may be smaller in size, the resort's efficient lift service provides a smoother and faster experience compared to its larger counterparts. This resort is highly favored by intermediate skiers, offering a perfect platform for skill improvement.
Previously, Togari Onsen offered two base areas, but recent changes due to the Covid-19 pandemic has led to the closure of the northeast slope. This has somewhat limited the options for beginners, leaving few hills for novice skiers. However, a practice area at the base of the Pegasus slope remains operational. Skilled skiers may find limited variety due to these restrictions, but hopes are high for a return to full operation for the 2023-24 season.
The resort is renowned for its good facilities and beautiful scenery. Its slopes are generally beginner-friendly and easily accessible from nearby accommodations. However, the snow level can fluctuate, which may affect skiing conditions. It's highly recommended for visitors to check the snow levels before planning their trip.
Despite its smaller size and lower base elevation, Togari Onsen has good terrain and a variety of courses. The resort is typically not crowded, making it a favorite destination for school and university students. It's worth noting that the surface conditions are often soft and wet due to the resort's southern exposure.
The resort also offers a pleasant surprise in the form of an on-site cafeteria that offers tasty options. However, the reception staff's hospitality has been a point of contention for some visitors. While the majority of the staff have been praised for their service, one particular member has been noted for a less than friendly demeanor.
Overall, Togari Onsen is a charming and underrated ski resort that offers a unique skiing experience. With the right conditions, it's certainly worth a visit. Whether you're a beginner looking to practice your skills or an advanced skier seeking new terrain, Togari Onsen has something for everyone.
