Cerro Perito Moreno – El Bolsón

“I had a disappointing experience at Cerro Perito Moreno in El Bolsón. After a three-hour drive from Esquel, we arrived at 1:00 PM and were assured that the mountain was open and only partially closed in some areas. However, upon reaching the site, we found the gravel road leading to it in poor condition. At the ticket office, we purchased three adult ski passes, a pedestrian pass, and a reduced pass for a 4-year-old child. The staff failed to provide crucial information such as which lifts were operational or the weather forecast. We discovered that only two lifts were in operation. Upon reaching the intermediate level, we found no working skiing facilities. A beginner-friendly slope was closed. We rented our skiing equipment at a rental shop, where we were advised against equipping our young companion due to the intense wind gusts. Three of us braved the conditions only to be met with a storm that drastically reduced visibility. A beginner's section with a rope for climbing was buried in snow. We had to make our way down the best we could to the intermediate level, only to find the lift we had taken was now closed. When I raised the issue with Rodrigo, the supervisor at the base, he offered no explanation for why the mountain was operating under such weather conditions. His only response was that they couldn't control the weather. The experience led me to conclude that the management seems more focused on collecting money rather than ensuring visitor safety. The blizzard-like conditions on the mountain were dangerous, and yet, helmet use wasn't mandatory. Despite the poor visibility, their website falsely claimed good visibility even at 10 PM. Furthermore, there was no attempt at offering compensation for the inconvenience. As we were leaving, we noticed a group of students being equipped for skiing, even though the hill was closed. When we inquired, we were told they were simply following orders. In conclusion, our visit to Cerro Perito Moreno was an unpleasant one. I felt it was important to share my experience and I plan to report this to the consumer protection agency. I also sent a message to their WhatsApp number seeking an explanation. I strongly feel that the mountain should have been closed that day for safety reasons.”

Unfortunately, we were not provided with any useful information about the operating lifts or weather conditions, we had to figure it out ourselves from a barely visible sign. We soon discovered that only two lifts were operating, one from the base to the intermediate level, and another to the next level. Once we reached the intermediate section, we found no functioning skiing facilities. There was a beginner's slope, but it was closed. Having rented our skiing equipment, three of us decided to go up to the next level, leaving the little girl with her mother at the intermediate section due to the increasingly strong wind gusts. At the top, we were met with a blizzard that reduced visibility to just a few meters. One of the beginner's sections had a rope to climb, which was buried in the snow due to heavy snowfall. Eventually, we had to make our way back down to the intermediate level. By the time we got there, the lift we had taken up had been closed. We decided to head back to the base, where I spoke with Rodrigo, a supervisor, who could not provide a satisfying explanation as to why the mountain was operating in such severe weather conditions. His only response was that they had no control over the weather, but that is no excuse for not taking necessary precautions. What became clear from this experience is that this establishment seems more concerned with making money than ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its visitors. In spite of the dangerous conditions, helmet use was not mandatory. Even after our experience, the website falsely reported good visibility on the mountain. Furthermore, there was no offer of compensation for our disappointing experience. To add insult to injury, as we were packing up to leave, we noticed a group of students being equipped for skiing, even though the mountain had been closed. When we inquired, we were simply told that they had orders to equip them anyway, revealing a complete disregard for their customers' well-being. In light of these events, I feel compelled to share our experience and take further action. This establishment should not have been open under such conditions. I've relayed this to their WhatsApp in hopes of receiving some kind of explanation. If you're looking for an enjoyable outing, I would advise against visiting this place.”
